Last Week: 24
Tulsa Golden Hurricane (7-0)It's going to take a minor miracle for anyone in Conference USA to slow down Tulsa's offense. The Hurricane amassed 791 yards against UTEP. They scored touchdowns on 11 of their 15 possessions. Only two of them took more than seven plays.
Last game: Beat UTEP, 77-35.
Next game: Sunday vs. UCF.
Last Week: 20
Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-1)It's time to find out whether Tim Brewster's Gophers are truly different than those of the Glen Mason days. The last time Minnesota appeared in the rankings, on Oct. 9, 2005, it proceeded to lose four of its last six games.
Last game: Beat Illinois, 27-20.
Next game: Saturday at Purdue.
Last Week: 16
Virginia Tech Hokies (5-2)As always, it's the Hokies' defense that's keeping them in contention in the ACC. If not for two interception returns for touchdowns against BC (by Brett Warren and Victor Harris), the Eagles may well have run away with the game.
Last game: Lost to Boston College, 28-23.
Next game: Saturday at Florida State.
Last Week: 8
Brigham Young Cougars (6-1)Last Thursday's demolition at TCU was a rude reality check for a team that had won 16 in a row. In a nightmarish performance, one-time Heisman candidate Max Hall was sacked seven times, threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles.
Last game: Lost to TCU, 32-7.
Next game: Saturday vs. UNLV.
Last Week: 23
Ball State Cardinals (7-0)Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan will be the last gimme for the Cardinals, who spend November facing four teams (Northern Illinois, Miami, Central Michigan and Western Michigan) that are a combined 12-4 in MAC play.
Last game: Beat Western Kentucky, 24-7.
Next game: Saturday vs. Eastern Michigan.
Dropped out: Wake Forest, North Carolina, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Kansas.
