Got gas? Choosing to eschew the likes of Gatorade and other energy drinks for hydration, the Utes' training staff has had its players sipping chocolate milk through straws this summer instead of downing traditional recovery drinks. A 2006 study (partially funded by the dairy association) used nine endurance cyclists as its guinea pigs and concluded chocolate milk to be as good as name-brand beverages. So far, reviews from the Utes have been mixed. "I don't know if it works, but it's at least refreshing," defensive end Paul Kruger told the Salt Lake Tribune. Safety Robert Johnson had a different view. "It messes up my stomach," Johnson said. "They say it's a good recovery, but I don't see it yet. It just gives me a lot of gas. I'm not a milk dude."

Best known for his vigorous defense ("I'm a man! I'm 40!") of quarterback Bobby Reid last season, Cowboys coach Mike Gundy will be calling the plays on offense during this year's opener against Washington. The third-year coach -- who previously served as offensive coordinator before being promoted -- lost last year's play-caller when Larry Fedora left Stillwater for the head coaching position at Southern Mississippi. Under Fedora, the Cowboys ranked seventh nationally in total offense with 486 yards per game. "Being in my office and dealing with all the other issues is not fun, but going in there and coaching offense is fun," Gundy said. "That's why I'm back involved." No word yet on how he will handle criticism of his play-calling during post-game press conferences.

Though Hurricanes quarterback Jacory Harris says he is "not really a person who gets too excited," Miami fans will be anxious to see how the true freshman performs as the starter in The U's opener against Charleston Southern. Taking the place of suspended redshirt freshman Robert Marve -- who police officials said broke the mirror of a car and briefly tried to evade police on foot in Coconut Grove -- Harris has not been assured of future starts. Marve is not the only Hurricane missing time, either. Six other players are suspended for the opener due to unspecified rules violations. Harris should feel at home amongst his peers as 13 true freshmen are expected to play on the first and second teams.
