Kicks and Colors spotlights the variety of colorways—and the stories that go with—that brands’ unveil in key basketball sneakers.
Sneaker: D Lillard 1
Signature athlete: Damian Lillard
Story: The logo on the D Lillard 1 has the feel of an “O” for his jersey number, the state he plays in now and for his hometown, Oakland. The latest D Lillard 1 was inspired by Oakland, designed in collaboration with hometown shop Oaklandish, a shop dedicated to all things local style and city support. “They are committed to bettering the community,” Lillard says. “Their message hits home with me and I wanted to create a unique shoe that shares their mission to rep Oakland.” He has done that with a suede black upper with yellow accents, leather on the heel and a white-and-black speckled midsole. The Oaktown logo fits in the sneaker’s sockliner, beneath the transparent outsole, on the heel pull-tab and at the base of the lace system. The Oaklandish edition debuts Sept. 10.
