Suns GM Ryan McDonough expressed regret over dealing Isaiah Thomas to the Celtics at last year’s deadline in a radio interview on Wednesday.

Talking on Arizona’s 98.7 FM Suns midseason special, McDonough discussed the deal candidly, according to ArizonaSports.com. The Suns are one of the league’s worst teams at 14–43 entering Thursday.

“I think in retrospect trading Isaiah Thomas when we did was a mistake,” he said of last season’s deal, which brought back the now-departed Marcus Thornton and a 2016 first-round pick. “I think sometimes in the recruitment process things sound better in July than they do in November.

“He wanted more, he wanted a bigger role and I understand why: He’s a talented player. In retrospect, we should have carried him into the summer. If there’s one (decision) that stands out, if I could get a mulligan, that’d be it.”

Thomas, 27, is in midst of a career year, averaging 21.6 points and 6.8 assists and making his first All-Star team.

The Celtics are 34–25 after defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 112–107 on Thursday. Thomas scored a game-high 27 points for the Celtics who are third in the Eastern Conference.

The Suns also dealt Goran Dragic at the deadline and brought in Brandon Knight to pair with Eric Bledsoe, shuffling their backcourt and ultimately triggering a series of moves that have yet to fully pan out.
