Video: Pacers' Hill hits game-winning layup to beat Lakers

*****

By Ben Golliver

Pacers guard George Hill hits the game-winning lay-up with 0.1 seconds remaining to defeat the Lakers at the Staples Center on Tuesday night. The basket gave Indiana a 79-77 victory.

The Pacers and Lakers played a sloppy one overall, but things got interesting in the final minute, when Kobe Bryant hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to pull the Lakers even at 77-77. Pacers coach Frank Vogel called timeout to diagram his final possession, and he ended up settling on what at first looked to be a high screen-and-roll set for Hill.

After Pacers swingman Paul George flashed through the paint as a decoy, forward David West came to the top of the key to set a screen on Lakers forward Metta World Peace. With the clock already under five seconds, though, Hill didn't wait for the pick, deciding to attack hard to his right off the dribble instead. World Peace seemed confused, as if he was expecting Hill to shoot a jumper, and big man Pau Gasol was not able to contain Hill as he turned the corner. Hill beat Gasol to the basket for a pretty right-handed scoop that kissed in off the glass and around the rim, over the top of a helping Dwight Howard for maximum difficulty points. Pretty, pretty stuff. The Lakers were not able to get a shot off on the ensuing possession, with just a tenth of a second to work with, and the game ended.

Hill finished with a team-high 19 points (on 7-of-12 shooting), five rebounds, five assists and one steal in 36 minutes. Bryant had 40 points (on 12-of-28 shooting), 10 rebounds and 10 turnovers. Both teams are now 7-8.
