Fan strips off Tayshaun Prince jersey after learning of trade to Grizzlies

By Ben Golliver

I'll cop to getting totally lost in the salary cap implications and luxury tax calculations that surrounded Wednesday's three-team trade that sent Rudy Gay to the Raptors. Let's allow this fan of Tayshaun Prince to remind us, in painful fashion, that players are still people capable of making a human impact and not just contract numbers in a spreadsheet.

The Fox Sports Detroit broadcast of Wednesday night's game between the Pistons and Pacers captured a man wearing Prince's No. 22 Pistons jersey, waiting eagerly for his favorite player to take the court with his teammates before the game in Indiana. When Prince (and teammate Austin Daye) never appeared because they had been dealt to the Grizzlies, the man began checking his phone, only to learn the trade details, which had just broken less than an hour earlier. Upon discovering the horrifying truth, the man stripped off his jersey to reveal a Kentucky t-shirt, surely worn in honor of Prince's collegiate contributions as a Wildcat.

Prior to Wednesday, Prince had spent his entire 11-year pro career with the Pistons, winning a title in 2004. The move  clearly marks an end of an era for the Pistons, for Prince, and for this man's jersey, which was shoved to the ground under his seat, likely never to be worn in public again. Or, at least not until the inevitable jersey retirement ceremony once the 32-year-old Prince decides to call it a career.
