Brandon Roy: 'My basketball days are numbered'

Three-time All-Star Brandon Roy indicated Sunday that his NBA career, marred by a series of knee injuries, is officially over.

"My basketball days are numbered, that's no secret," Roy said, speaking at a University of Washington alumni game in Seattle, according to ESPN.com. Roy reportedly said that he will decide his next move this fall.

Roy, 28, was released by the Timberwolves back in May after playing just five games during the 2012-13 season and spending the 2011-12 season in an unofficial retirement. The Blazers released Roy using the amnesty clause in Dec. 2011 after issues with both of his knees limited him to 47 appearances during the 2010-11 season.

Last summer, then-Timberwolves president David Kahn signed Roy to a two-year, $10.4 million contract, but Roy succumbed to knee trouble again early in the 2012-13 season, undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in November. Although he was initially expected to miss just one month, a setback wound up keeping him off the court for the rest of the season.

Reports surfaced throughout last season that Roy would retire again and he said in March that he had no regrets despite the injuries.

“If I never play another game, I’ll still be completely happy with my career,” he said.

Roy averaged 5.8 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds for the Timberwolves in his five appearances. The 2007 Rookie of the Year holds career averages of 18.8 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game and was named to the 2009 All-NBA second-team and the 2010 All-NBA third-team.

Minnesota endured a rash of injuries and finished 31-51 last season, missing the playoffs for the ninth straight year. Kahn was let go by the Timberwolves in April and replaced by Flip Saunders.
