Bio: Kentucky | Freshman | Shooting Guard
Vitals: 6-5, 189 pounds
2012-13 Statistics: 14.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, 44 percent shooting in 33 games.
Strengths: Goodwin has the size, speed, athletic ability and length to make an impact in a number of ways. Kentucky coach John Calipari said Goodwin's "got the work habits and drive to be special." ESPN's Dick Vitale said Calipari referred to Goodwin as a "mini version of Russell Westbrook" near the start of last season, a nod to Goodwin's physical gifts and ability to attack the rim.
Weaknesses: A Western Conference coach who watched Goodwin at the combine described his shot as "very flat." Goodwin shot only 26.6 percent from three-point range and 63.7 percent from the free-throw line in his one season at Kentucky. He also had more turnovers than assists. The 18-year-old needs to refine his game across the board.
What Scouts Say: "He's a good athlete who handles the ball well. Calipari tried to play him at the point, but he doesn't have that mentality. I don't see him contributing right away. You have to remember, he's just turning 19 [in August]. Let's [wait] a few years and see what we have." Team Fit: Goodwin had a disappointing solo season in college at Kentucky, but he could turn into a good pro down the road. He's very young, but Phoenix is in rebuilding mode anyway, so they have time to let him develop at his more natural shooting guard spot. He has a lot of work to do, but he has some good pedigree and good size with which to work.
