The Knicks announced Thursday that reserve forward/center Jeremy Tyler will miss approximately eight-to-10 weeks after undergoing surgery to address a stress fracture in his right foot.

Tyler, 22, signed a two-year, minimum-salary contract in August after playing for New York at the Las Vegas summer league. His 2013-14 salary is only partially guaranteed.

Once regarded as one of the top players in his high school class, Tyler was selected in the second round of the 2011 draft after skipping his senior year of high school and foregoing college to play professionally in Israel and Japan. The 6-foot-10, 260-pound big man spent his rookie season with the Warriors and was traded to the Hawks at the 2013 deadline. He holds career averages of 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds. In Vegas, Tyler averaged a team-high 12.8 points and 6.4 rebounds in five games.

Tyler wasn't expected to play major minutes for the Knicks this season, as Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony, Andrea Bargnani, Amar'e Stoudemire and Kenyon Martin are all above him on the Knicks' depth chart.

An eight-week timeline would place Tyler's return date in early November; a 10-week recovery would push his return to later that month. Either way, Tyler is expected to miss all of training camp and the preseason. New York, the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed in 2012-13, is set to host Milwaukee in its regular season opener on Oct. 30.
