Nets coach Jason Kidd was suspended for the first two games of the regular season after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge.

The NBA's announcement Friday means that Kidd, 40, won't make his regular-season coaching debut until Nov. 3 at Orlando. The Nets open the season at Cleveland on Oct. 30 and play host to Miami on Nov. 1.

"The decision is consistent with what the league has done in the past, and we look forward to Jason leading our team versus Orlando and the rest of the year," Nets general manager Billy King said in a statement.

In July 2012, Kidd was charged with drunken driving after crashing his SUV into a telephone pole in Southampton, N.Y. The arrest came days after Kidd signed a three-year, $9 million deal with the Knicks, of which he fulfilled only one season before retiring. The Nets hired Kidd as their coach in June, and a month later he pleaded guilty and was placed on interim probation.

The Nets could turn to Lawrence Frank to serve as coach during Kidd's absence. Frank, who coached the Nets from 2004-09 and the Pistons from 2011-13, was hired as Kidd's top assistant. The coaching staff also includes John Welch, Joe Prunty and Charles Klask.

Brooklyn plays its first preseason game in Washington on Tuesday.
