Iman Shumpert bids farewell to the NBA's finest flattop

Some sad news in the lead-up to the NBA season: Knicks guard Iman Shumpert -- previous owner the NBA's most ambitiously skyscraping flattop -- has decided to move in a new, more restrained stylistic direction with his hair. Knicks web manager Jonah Ballow posted the above photo to Instagram, showing a shaved-down Shumpert staring blankly into the out-of-frame abyss. He is still a player of purpose, a perimeter defender of unquestionable mettle. But this marks a crisis of identity for a player who drew power from his flattop, not to mention a very public loss in the sacrifice of high hair art.

What's worse: The change came without warning. As recently as July, Shumpert was adding flourishes in the form of spot dye:

And true to the theme of media day, Shumpert's trimmed down hairstyle retained its general form, as to invoke the promise of growing anew:

But no more. For the foreseeable future, Shumpert's hair will be utterly ordinary. Rest in peace, dear flattop. It pains me to think of the heights you could have someday reached.
