Video: Pistons' Josh Smith clanks home buzzer-beating, game-winning three-pointer

What better way for the Pistons to close out their exhibition schedule than with a Josh Smith game-winning three-pointer that clanked home at the buzzer to defeat the Timberwolves?

Detroit topped Minnesota at home 99-98 when Smith, a career 28.3 percent three-point shooter, knocked home a triple from the right wing as time expired.

With 3.6 seconds remaining and Minnesota up two, Kyle Singler inbounded to Smith. Without hesitation, Smith pulled the trigger over a contesting effort from Derrick Williams with three seconds remaining. The ball hit the front rim with more than a second on the clock before falling through the net right as time expired. Carom or not, Smith pumped his first to celebrate the game-winner and received congratulations from his teammates near midcourt.

Long mocked for his lack of perimeter shooting, Smith connected on 30.3 percent of his threes last season as a member of the Hawks. However, per NBA.com/stats, the right wing was his best zone on the arc, as he hit 36.5 percent of his opportunities from that location. (Compare that to just 20.8 percent from the right corner.)

Smith finished with a game-high 20 points (on 6-for-17 shooting), six rebounds and two assists. Greg Monroe added 17 points and five rebounds for the Pistons.

Minnesota was led by Kevin Love's 19 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

Detroit completed its preseason schedule with a 4-4 record and will open the regular season on Oct. 30 against Washington.

The Timberwolves dropped to 4-3 on the preseason and will proceed to their regular season opener on Oct. 30 against the Magic.
