With foot surgery looming and an abundance of big men on Houston's roster, the Rockets are set to release veteran center Marcus Camby on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen.

Camby, 39, tore his plantar fascia earlier this month and has been attempting to rehabilitate in hopes of avoiding surgery. But according to Feigen, the 2007 NBA Defensive Player of the Year has been unable to heal quickly and has shown only "minimal progress" in recent days.

From Feigen:

But despite his impending release, Camby could still have a future with the Rockets. The Chronicle reports the 17-year veteran might stick around as a big man coach or possibly even be a late-season addition if he can recover:

Camby played in just 24 games for the Knicks last season, averaging 1.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game. Houston had planned to use Camby as a third-string center to back up Dwight Howard and Omer Asik.

The center was originally dealt to the Raptors this offseason in the Andrea Bargnani trade, but was bought out by Toronto, leading to his signing a one-year deal with Houston.
