Video: Timberwolves' Corey Brewer explodes for career-high 51 points vs. Rockets

Timberwolves forward Corey Brewer scored a career-high 51 points to carry Minnesota to a 112-110 home victory over the Houston Rockets on Friday.

The out-of-nowhere performance eclipsed Brewer's previous career-high of 29 points, which he scored for Denver in a March 21, 2013, victory over Philadelphia. His previous 2013-14 season-high was 27 points in a Nov. 13, 2013, victory over Cleveland.

Brewer also tied Kevin Love for the Timberwolves' franchise scoring record.

''I'm not even going to lie,'' Brewer said, according to the Associated Press. ''Fifty?!?' ... You know how many guys scored 50 in the NBA? That's what makes it such a special night because I never in my career expected to score 50. ... There's a lot of good company up there.''

To answer Brewer's rhetorical question, there have been just 71 instances of a player scoring 50+ points over the last 10 NBA seasons. Only 27 different players have accomplished the feat during the time period.

Brewer became just the fifth player this season to top 50 points, joining Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony (62), Heat forward LeBron James (61), Thunder forward Kevin Durant (54 and 51) and Raptors guard Terrence Ross (51).

On the night, Brewer shot 19-for-30 from the field, 2-for-6 from deep and 11-for-15 from the free throw line, adding two rebounds, one assist, six steals and a block in 45 minutes. Most of his damage was done in the basket area, with 16 of his 19 field goals around the hoop.

Here's a look at his shot chart.

In case you were wondering why the second three-pointer isn't showing up on the shot chart, Brewer nailed a second-quarter buzzer-beater from behind halfcourt. Go ahead and paint the backcourt green if you like.

Brewer, 28, has averaged just 9.9 points per game during his seven-year career. There's little doubt this performance will linger as one of the most random scoring explosions in modern NBA history, as ESPN Stats & Information notes that Brewer became just the sixth player in league history to score 50+ points without previously topping 30 points in a game. His name will now be mentioned alongside the likes of Tony Delk, Dana Barros, Tracy Murray and Willie Burton, among other improbable 50+ point scorers.

Minnesota beat Houston thanks to a game-winning jumper by Gorgui Dieng during the game's closing seconds.
