The Pistons announced on Tuesday the hiring of longtime NBA executive Jeff Bower as GM. Bower will report to Stan Van Gundy, the Pistons' new president of basketball operations and coach.

"I’m pleased to welcome Jeff Bower to the Detroit Pistons organization," Van Gundy said in a statement. "Jeff brings great basketball knowledge and NBA experience to our organization and he’s enjoyed success in building teams.  He’s a great evaluator of talent and Jeff will bring solid leadership to our front office."

The 53-year-old Bower coached Marist College for the 2013-14 season, guiding the Red Foxes to a 12-19 record.

Bower's most recent NBA experience came as the GM of the New Orleans Hornets, prior to their rebranding as the Pelicans. He held the position from 2005 until 2010, after previously serving as the organization's GM from 2001 to 2003 when it was located in Charlotte. He worked his way through the ranks of the Hornets organization since 1995, holding a variety of positions that included advance scout, director of scouting, assistant coach, assistant GM, director of player personnel and interim coach.

"I’m excited to join the Pistons organization and play a role in helping this franchise build on its great basketball tradition," Bower said in a statement. "I look forward to working with Stan, his staff and everyone in the Pistons organization to put together a team that the community can support and be proud of.  I’m also excited about ownership’s commitment to winning and their demonstrated commitment to the community."

The highlights of Bower's tenure as GM of the Hornets include drafting Chris Paul and David West. The franchise also won the Southwest Division title in 2008 with a 56-win season that ended with a trip to the Western Conference semifinals.

The Hornets and Bower parted ways in 2010 after a disappointing 37-win season that saw Bower step in as interim coach following the early-season firing of Byron Scott.

Van Gundy was hired by the Pistons in a dual role following the April resignation Joe Dumars.
