Jazz hire Hawks assistant Quin Snyder as coach

The Jazz announced on Friday the hiring of Hawks assistant Quin Snyder as their next head coach.

Sportando.net and Yahoo Sports first reported that Snyder had been tapped to replace Tyrone Corbin, who was not retained by the Jazz when his contract expired this summer. Yahoo Sports further reported Snyder will receive a four-year contract that includes a team option on the final year.

Snyder, 47, has held a variety of coaching positions over the last 20 years, but this would mark his first NBA head coaching job.

"The opportunity to join the Utah Jazz and to be part of such a highly respected franchise with an incredibly bright future is a great honor," Snyder said in a statement. "I approach this opportunity with gratitude and humility and am committed to doing everything I can to help the Jazz become a championship-caliber team."

After playing basketball at Duke for four years in the 1980s, Snyder served as a Blue Devils assistant coach under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. Snyder took his first head coaching job at the University of Missouri in 1999, only to resign in 2006 following an NCAA investigation.

Snyder later coached the Austin Toros, the San Antonio Spurs' D-League affiliate, from 2007-10. During that time period, Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey served as assistant GM of the Spurs.

"Quin Snyder combines a unique skillset with several intangibles that makes him the right fit for our team and approach to basketball,” Lindsey said in a statement. "He is passionate about the game and has a 20-year track record of teaching and developing young talent. His personality, work ethic and communications skills are important traits that will benefit the Utah Jazz. We have taken a significant and exciting step forward in the evolution of this franchise."

Since 2010, Snyder has held coaching roles with the 76ers, Lakers and CSKA Moscow in Russia. He spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant under first-year Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, who was also a former Spurs assistant under coach Gregg Popovich.

Utah decided to part ways with Corbin following a 25-57 season. Corbin stepped in following the sudden retirement of Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan in 2010, compiling a 112-146 (.434) record in three-plus seasons. The Jazz hold the No. 5 pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Snyder will inherit a young, rebuilding Jazz roster built around recent lottery picks Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Trey Burke and Gordon Hayward, who will be a restricted free agent this summer.
