The Dallas Cowboys will release quarterback Kyle Orton, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter

Orton had served as Tony Romo's backup since 2012. He made his only start as a Cowboy in Week 17 last season, after Romo had back surgery. Orton was last a full-time starter in 2010 with the Denver Broncos, when he threw for 3,653 yards, 20 TDs and 9 interceptions.

BURKE: Offseason Report Card: Cowboys

The Cowboys had a surplus of veteran backup quarterbacks after they traded for former first-round pick Brandon Weeden and signed Caleb Hanie this offseason. Dallas also has undrafted rookie Dustin Vaughan on its roster.

SI WIRE: McNabb says he's not sure why Jason Garrett still has a job

Last season, the Cowboys only carried two quarterbacks on their roster.
