Arizona Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu said Friday that he is six to eight weeks away from playing, according to a report from Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

The Cardinals announced Wednesday that Mathieu has been placed on the physically unable to perform list after he suffered a torn ACL in December.

Mathieu, 22, recorded 65 tackles and two interceptions as a rookie in 2013.

Mathieu can be taken off the PUP list at any time and participate in training camp if he is cleared to return. If he is placed on the regular season PUP list, Mathieu cannot practice or play until week 6.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians had targeted October 1 as a possible return date for Mathieu and nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu, who was also placed on the PUP list Wednesday.

The Cardinals went 10-6, missed the playoffs and finished in third place in the NFC West last season.
