Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather was suspended the first two games of the regular season after putting an illegal hit on Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith on Saturday, but Smith said he doesn't think the punishment is warranted.

"No need I'm straight buttt since it was illegal he can donate to my foundation haha," Smith tweeted in response to the announcement of the suspension.

Smith went on to further explain his position:

The wide receiver said he talked to Meriweather about the hit and Smith understands "it's football." However, he admitted he might feel differently if he he had been injured on the play.

Meriweather can appeal the two-game ban. He was also suspended two games last season for two illegal hits. Saturday's incident was his sixth player safety violation.
