The Associated Press announced that they will recognize the NFL's top assistant coach with a new award starting this season.

The AP currently hands out seven other NFL awards, including the Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year, and Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year awards.

A panel of 50 media members who cover the league will vote on the award, which will be handed out the night before the Super Bowl.  Any assistant coach, coordinator, position coach or quality control coach is eligible for the award.

What are the expectations for each of the NFL's new head coaches?

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the award is overdue.

"Every head coach is an extension of his staff," Ryan said. “That's the absolute truth. I don't care how good one man is, he can't get the job done without an outstanding set of assistant coaches. And this is a way to recognize them."

It’s the AP’s first new NFL award since honoring the first Comeback Player of the Year in 1998.
