Free-agent defensive end Michael Sam won't be signed to the St. Louis Rams' practice squad, the NFL Network's Albert Breer reported Sunday.

Sam was cut by the Rams on Saturday as the team trimmed its roster to 53 players. He cleared waivers on Sunday and is now free to sign with any team. But it won't be with St. Louis, as Breer reported the Rams are looking to fill their practice squad with players who provide them with more depth at other positions.

Earlier this year, the 24-year-old Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team. The Rams selected Sam in the seventh round.

Sam told reporters after the Rams' preseason loss to the Dolphins last week that he's confident he would make an NFL roster. The Rams' final roster spot this weekend went to West Texas A&M defensive end Ethan Westbrooks
