The Washington Redskins have hired San Diego Chargers linebacker coach Joe Barry as their defensive coordinator, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Redskins reportedly interviewed defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, San Francisco 49ers assistant Eric Mangini and former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for the position. Fangio took the same position with the Chicago Bears.

Barry spent the last four seasons with the Chargers and was also the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions in 2007 and 2008. He also spent time on the staffs of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 49ers and USC before taking the Chargers' linebacker coaching job.

In 2008 under Barry, the Lions allowed the second-most points in NFL history and were the first team ever to finish a season 0-16.

Barry replaces Jim Haslett, who spent five seasons with the team. Haslett's defenses never ranked above 13th in total defense.

The Redskins' defense gave up 357 yards and 27.4 points per game in 2014, which tied for 29th in the NFL.
