New York Giants co-owner Ann Mara passed away Sunday morning due to complications stemming from head trauma suffered in January.

Mara was hospitalized Jan. 18 after falling near her home in Westchester, N.Y., according to ESPN

"Mrs. Mara was a tower of strength, dignity and inspiration for her family and all of us in the NFL," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Her family and the Giants organization have always reflected Mrs. Mara's competitive spirit, integrity, and wonderful sense of humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with John Mara and the entire Mara family."

"After a few days, we were hopeful for her recovery, although we knew it would be a long road back," said John Mara, her son and the Giants' president. "Unfortunately, there were complications."

Mara was the widow of former Giants owner Wellington Mara, who died in 2005. She owned 50 percent of the Giants along with her 11 children.

Her father-in-law, Tim Mara, founded the New York Giants franchise in 1925. She was also the grandmother to actresses Rooney and Kate Mara.

Ann Mara was 85 years old.
