The NFL plans to broadcast one regular season game next season exclusively online.

The NFL plans to broadcast one regular season game next season online, reports Sports Business Daily’s John Ourand.

The league has not decided or finalized any deals and will wait to see which digital companies would like to produce the game and handle the advertising sales.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hinted at such a proposition during his annual State of the League during Super Bowl week.

Goodell said the game would be carried in both teams' home markets on standard broadcast platforms, but that a stream online would allow the game to reach “millions of homes that do not have traditional television service.”

New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri knocks through a game-winning field as the Pats stunned the St. Louis Rams, 20-17. Vinatieri's 48-yarder as time expired came after quarterback Tom Brady led the Patriots down the field with 1:30 left and no timeouts.

Super Bowl XXXVII — Jan. 26, 2003

Tampa Bay defensive tackle Warren Sapp brings down Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon and jars the ball free for a fumble. Although the Raiders recovered the fumble, the Buccaneers' defense controlled the game, scoring three touchdowns on interception returns. Those touchdowns helped Tampa Bay easily prevail 48-21.

Super Bowl XXXVII — Jan. 26, 2003

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Joe Jurevicius extends a stiff arm at cornerback Tory James in the Bucs 38-21 victory. Jurevicius led all receivers with 78 yards on four catches despite playing with the distraction of his infant son, who was born prematurely five days before the NFC Championship and eventually died in March 2003.

Quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots rush the field after defeating the Carolina Panthers. Kicker Adam Vinatieri nailed a 41-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to put the Patriots on top 32-29.

New England Patriots linebacker and tight end Mike Vrabel reaches for a floating pass from Tom Brady in the end zone. Vrabel's touchdown grab put the Patriots up 14-7 in the third quarter. On defense, Vrabel's primary duties, he sacked Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb for a 16-yard loss. The Patriots won 24-21.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward leaps in the end zone after catching a 43-yard touchdown pass from Antwaan Randle El. Randle El, a wide receiver who played quarterback in college, threw the pass after a wide receiver reverse that left Ward wide open. Ward led all receivers with 123 yards on five catches in the 21-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison beats the Arizona Cardinals in a foot race as he returns a Kurt Warner interception 100 yards for a touchdown. Harrison's interception return, which came on the last play of the second quarter, is the longest play in Super Bowl history and gave the Steelers a 17-7 halftime lead. Pittsburgh went on to win 27-23.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes gets both feet down in the back right corner of the end zone to score a game-winning touchdown as safety Aaron Francisco attempts to push him out of bounds. After Arizona had scored 16 consecutive points in the second half to take a 23-20 lead, Holmes pulled in this Ben Roethlisberger pass with 35 seconds left to lift the Steelers to the 27-23 win.

The Patriots pulled themselves out of a 25-point hole against the Falcons to a 34-28 win for New England's fifth NFL championship. It was the first Super Bowl decided in overtime.

The league will consider experimenting with one of the three International Series games that are scheduled to be played in London next season. Each game will kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET, and Sports Business Journal reports the league is looking at the game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 25 as a favorite for the live stream game.

“That 9:30 a.m. time slot is interesting internationally when you start to think of parts of Asia, where it reaches into Sunday night, as well as parts of Europe,” NFL senior vice president of media strategy Hans Schroeder said. "The one-off, over-the-top game is more of a test to see if digital companies can handle the large audiences that watch NFL games.”

The league already has a four-year, $1 billion partnership with Verizon, the nation’s largest phone company.

The service gives customers in home markets who signed up a chance to stream every regular-season and playoff game on their smartphones, plus view the NFL Network and NFL Red Zone channels.
