Jameis Winston's Tampa Bay contract prevents him from playing baseball

Jameis Winston prevented from playing baseball during time with Tampa Bay, per his contract with the Bucs.

The baseball career of Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston is on hold for now: Winston has a clause in his rookie contract prohibiting him from playing professional baseball for the duration of his deal in Tampa, reports the MMQB’s Peter King.

Winston played two seasons for the Seminoles baseball team, saving nine games in 41 relief appearances and batting .209 in 158 at-bats during his career.

Winston, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL draft, signed a four-year deal worth $25.35 million, including a $16.69 million signing bonus. The team holds the fifth-year option on the contract.

The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner told King at the NFL scouting combine that it had been his dream to play both sports, but said “I’m just playing football right now.”

Those comments were enough concern for the Buccaneers brass to put something in place in his contract to make sure Winston’s focus is solely on football.
