Atlanta Falcons running back Tevin Coleman will miss Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys with a rib injury, the team announced Friday.

The injury movesDevonta Freeman into Atlanta’s lead back role.

Coleman, 22, had rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown in Atlanta’s first two games before injuring his ribs last week against the New York Giants. Coleman and Freeman competed for the starting job during the preseason, during which time Freeman battled a hamstring injury.

Freeman, 23, has served in a change-of-pace role this season, with 43 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He has also registered seven catches to Coleman’s zero.

Though there will be a change on the ground, Atlanta has leaned heavily on quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones. The Falcons amassed 636 net passing yards in two games, a number that was third-best in the NFL entering Week 3.
