Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger does not have a set timetable for his return and still is in “quite a bit of pain,” he said on 93.7 The Fan on Tuesday.

Roethlisberger sustained an MCL sprain and bone bruise in his left knee during his team’s 12–6 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 3.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported on Sunday that the quarterback was set to make his return on Oct. 25 for the Steelers’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs, which was consistent with the original report that Roethlisberger was expected to recover in four weeks.

Roethlisberger said he is not sure where that target date came from.

“What we’re trying not to do is put a time on it and just go week-by-week,” he said, “Basically say, ‘I’m out this week, we’ll reevaluate it next week and see if and what I can do.’ To me, that’s the better way and maybe the more optimistic way to look at it. Rather than put a number on it, lets just take it one week at a time.”

Although Roethlisberger said his doctor is happy with his progression so far, he still has more healing to do before he can play again. He added that the bone bruise continues to cause him pain and that the MCL spain, though not painful, makes it difficult to walk without a brace.
