Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron compared his situation to that of the Patriots’ Tom Brady on Sunday.

McCarron replaced Andy Dalton in the Bengals’ 33–20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, during which starting quarterback Andy Dalton left with an injured thumb. Dalton is expected to miss some time with the injury.

McCarron said “Tom Brady was in the same situation” while talking to reporters after the game. Brady rose to prominence as the Patriots’ starter in 2001, filling in for an injured Drew Bledsoe. He eventually led the Patriots to a Super Bowl that same season.

The Bengals, now 10–3 after the loss, could be one of the top seeds in the AFC when the playoffs begin. Dalton has not won a playoff game despite being to the postseason every year of his career.
