Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is out for Week 16 against the St. Louis Rams, head coach Pete Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle on Monday.

“It's just a race against time right now,” Carroll said. “I know he’s going for it, so that’s what’s important.”

Lynch underwent surgery Nov. 25 to repair a sports hernia and was expected to return to the field late in the season, according to Carroll.

The nine-year veteran has been out since his team’s Week 11 win over the San Francisco 49ers. With Lynch now ruled out against the Rams, the earliest he could return is Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals
