NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson to continue bidding for Super Bowls in the future, reports Katherine Terrell of The New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Goodell told Benson to keep bidding in a letter he wrote after New Orleans lost its bid for the 2019 Super Bowl to Atlanta.

“It is clear to all owners that New Orleans is a top-notch Super Bowl city with talented leadership representing the Saints and the community,” Goodell wrote in the letter. “Although you did not secure the 2019 game against unusually strong and unique competition, we would look forward to working closely with you and your community in bringing a Super Bowl back to New Orleans soon.”

New Orleans has not hosted the NFL’s championship game since 2013, when the lights went out during the game between the Ravens and the 49ers. Though recently renovated, the Superdome is one of the NFL’s older stadiums, and the league has shown a propensity to award the Super Bowl to franchises who secure stadium upgrades.

From 2017–2021, the Super Bowl will be held in stadiums that are opening or being majorly renovated in the next two seasons.
