Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback Xavien Howard underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and has been placed on the physically unable to perform list, the team announced Tuesday.

Despite the surgery, the Dolphins do expect Howard to be ready for the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 11.

Howard was drafted out of Baylor by Miami in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old played in 13 games for the Bears last season, recording 42 tackles and five interceptions.

Howard was expected to compete for a starting position in training camp.
