San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been given medical clearance to fully participate in practice during training camp, Matt Barrows of the San Francisco Bee reports.

Barrows reports that Kaepernick met with the doctor who performed his November shoulder surgery to go through a series of on-field tests, which he passed.

Kaepernick had previously been limited during OTAs after undergoing off-season surgeries on his left shoulder, left knee and right thumb.

Kaepernick will begin the preseason attempting to earn back his starting role, which he ceded to Blaine Gabbert after Kaepernick went on injured reserve last November. Gabbert worked with the first team during OTAs while Kaepernick worked with the second, but Kaepernick said in June he was expecting the starting role to be up for grabs.

The 49ers begin training camp on Sunday.
