Chargers rookie Joey Bosa holding out, not reporting to training camp
Chargers rookie defensive end Joey Bosa will hold out in contract negotiations and will not report to training camp on Friday, NFL.com reports.
Bosa, the No. 3 overall pick out of Ohio State, is leveraging to receive the entirety of his bonus money up front, with the Chargers preferring to pay him in two installments, the larger one coming first. General manager Tom Telesco confirmed the bonus distribution is the central issue and said the Chargers will not change their offer, as the team does not want to make an exception for one player.
Rookie contracts work under a salary slot scale, but the offset language and bonus payments are negotiable. Bosa and 49ers linebacker Joshua Garnett are the only first-round picks still unsigned.
Bosa has already missed several days of organized team activities as well as the Chargers’ mandatory mini-camp in June.
Chargers training camp workouts begin on Saturday morning.
