LaRon Landry signs with Indianapolis Colts

The New York Jets were not really sure what they were getting in safety LaRon Landry, when they signed him to a one-year deal last offseason after an Achilles injury sidelined him in 2011. Landry surprised just about everyone by turning in a Pro Bowl season, complete with 100 tackles.

Landry cashed in on that bounce-back year late Wednesday, inking a four-year, $24 million deal that comes with $14 million guaranteed.

The Colts have worked quickly this offseason to improve a secondary that allowed nearly 3,800 yards last season, a number that put them in the lower half against the pass. Already, Indianapolis has re-signed CB Darius Butler and added CB Greg Toler.

Add the hard-hitting Landry in at strong safety, and the Colts might be onto something.

The clear red flag on this deal is Landry's health -- he missed 15 games between the 2010 and '11 seasons. Should he suffer another ailment or reinjure his Achilles (which healed initially thanks in part to stem-cell treatment), then that $14 million guaranteed will stand as a costly misfire.

Otherwise, the Colts just picked up a 28-year-old, Pro Bowl safety who might be entering his prime.

Grade: B-minus. This feels like one of those deals that either will turn out to be a total success or a massive failure, with no in-between scenario. If Landry stays on the field, he'll make a huge impact -- and he needs to, since the Colts spent so much to get him.
