Brandon Gibson signs with Miami Dolphins

Brandon Gibson agreed to a three-year deal with the Miami Dolphins on Friday. The inconsistent Gibson will join Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline to fill the top three spots on the Dolphins' receiver depth chart.

The Dolphins also added tight end Dustin Keller earlier Friday, giving them a trio of new weapons for Ryan Tannehill -- Hartline re-signed with Miami earlier this week.

Gibson caught 51 passes for a career-high 691 yards and five touchdowns last season in St. Louis, though he may have been stretched a little thin in an offense bereft of a true No. 1 (especially when Danny Amendola was sidelined by injuries). He'll have a lot less pressure -- and you'd assume a lot less defensive attention -- with Wallace, Hartline and Keller drawing attention.

This signing probably means the end of Davone Bess' time in Miami. Bess made 61 catches last season, second on the team to only Hartline, but there were rumblings that the team was unhappy that he refused to play through a back injury late in the year.

Perhaps even more significantly, Gibson's addition would seem to take Miami out of the running for a wide receiver in the draft, at least in Round 1. To this point, the Dolphins had been linked to a couple of the incoming rookie class' better talents at that position, like Cordarrelle Patterson. With Wallace, Hartline and Gibson all signed for multiple years, however, Miami may not be able to take on that luxury.

Grade: C. Gibson has some ability -- Peter King ranked him 46th in this year's free-agent class -- but he may never get any better than he was in St. Louis. If that is indeed the case, then the Dolphins will have to ask themselves if they have been better off holding onto Bess or using a Round 1 pick on a receiver.
