The San Francisco 49ers could be hearing from the league in the coming days, after a non-uniformed member of the team decked Seattle gunner Jeremy Lane on a punt. Lane was pushed into the San Francisco bench area by a pair of blockers, then stumbled and collided with one of the 49ers as he made his way back onto the field of play.
Tough to say if there was any malice behind the incident -- when the person on San Francisco's sideline notices Lane coming, he appears to jump back as if to avoid him, though he definitely lays a pretty heavy blow. That Lane was several yards over the sideline contrasts this particular play with the likes of Mike Tomlin's sidestep on Jacoby Jones earlier this year or the Jets' Sal Alosi's trip of Nolan Carroll.
As of yet, no one has been able to identify successfully the Niner in question. Because of his attire and positioning on the sideline, the best guess is one of San Francisco's inactive players or practice-squad members. Jonathan Baldwin, Eric Wright, Derek Carrier, Nick Moody, Ryan Seymour, Quinton Dial and Joe Looney all were inactive for Sunday's game.
The play itself can be seen below, via The Big Lead. Should the 49ers have been flagged on the play or do they deserve a fine? Or was this just an innocent accident?
