After falling off the map following an abrupt exit from the scouting combine, San Diego State running back Adam Muema has resurfaced, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. On Friday, Muema arrived at a workout facility in Florida where he was training for the NFL combine. The Tribune reports that he was still wearing his NFL-issued combine gear.
So where has Muema been for the last three days? The airport, apparently.
In a phone interview with the U-T Friday morning, Corey Nelson, a linebacker from Oklahoma who has been training with Muema in Florida since January, said Muema called him on Thursday evening asking for a ride from the airport.
Nelson said Muema was still wearing his NFL combine gear when he got into the car. When asked to describe Muema’s demeanor on Thursday, Nelson said the running back seemed “focused, cheerful and very wise.”
“He said he was at the airport for three days straight,” Nelson said. “He was telling me when I picked him up that God told him to stay at the airport and don’t do anything, just stay there. That’s what he did for three days straight.
“On the fourth day, he told me he couldn’t do it anymore. He decided to call me.”
Muema, according to the Tribune, headed "home" to Southern California Friday morning. "I feel like he’s OK," Nelson said, trying to downplay the concern surrounding the running back. "I feel like people shouldn’t worry about him at all. He’s good.”
Citing religious reasons, Muema left the combine Sunday, prior to his positional group work out. He said that he was simply “following God,” who told Muema that he’d play for the Seattle Seahawks if he missed workouts at the combine. After that, the San Diego State running back dropped off the map. “I have no idea where is,” a person close to Muema said. “[San Diego State coaches] have been trying to track him down, too. Every time they do, his phone is off. … It’s a frustrating deal.”
The projected third-day draft pick offered no clarity about his plans going forward. Will he work out at his pro day? Will he interview with teams prior to the draft? Nelson didn’t know the answer. “He didn’t say,” Nelson told the Tribune
. “We didn’t even talk about it.”
