Pittsburgh Steelers replace Jerricho Cotchery with ex-Saint Lance Moore

The Pittsburgh Steelers swapped out one veteran wide receiver for another, signing 30-year-old Lance Moore to fill the shoes of 31-year-old Jerricho Cotchery, who signed with the Panthers this week.

Out of nowhere, Cotchery developed into a Ben Roethlisberger red-zone favorite last season -- his 10 TD catches was two off his aggregate total from 2008-12. Moore will need a similar career resurgence to be much more than an occasional role player. He is coming off a 37-catch, 457-yard season, his worst statistically since an injury-plagued 2009 campaign.

Moore did have a 1,000-catch showing in 2012 and has caught 38 touchdowns over his career, so he should at least slightly offset the losses of Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders.

The Steelers still figure to look at the receiver position in the draft. They did so in last year's third round, nabbing speedster Markus Wheaton out of Oregon State. He will be expected to take on a larger role in 2014, though the need for a quality No. 2 alongside Antonio Brown remains, as both Wheaton and Moore are better-suited to pitching in from the slot.

The Saints released Moore earlier this month, and he found very little interest in his services outside of Pittsburgh. The lack of phone calls may serve as motivation for Moore, but it also could be a warning to the Steelers of what they're getting in the aging wideout.

Grade: C-plus. Not much to write home about here. Moore ought to be better than he was in 2013, when he essentially was replaced in the rotation by Kenny Stills. He still may not be as productive as Cotchery was last year, nor does he change the Steelers' wish list headed into the draft.
