The New York Jets signed veteran quarterback Michael Vick to a one-year, $5 million contract last week, and many immediately believed he would be the favorite to land the starting job in the Big Apple. New York was hoping to sign a veteran that would push youngster Geno Smith for the No. 1 job and help him improve, and Vick is certainly that man.

But could Smith still start the season as the Jets' main signal-caller?

Ryan was asked Tuesday whether Smith would have a chance of keeping the Jets' starting quarterback job to which he responded, "I would say yes."

He added, "It's going to be interesting to see the competition, but Geno is going to be hard to beat out."

Ryan may say that the competition will be close, but it will take a strong effort by Smith in the offseason to prove he is the Jets future.

With Vick reunited with his former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, it would be an upset to see Smith improve enough to leapfrog Vick as the starter. Of course, Vick has been known to be injury prone and even if he does lead the offense onto the field for the season-opener, it may only be a matter of time until Smith gets another opportunity.
