Mark Sanchez passes physical, will sign deal with Philadelphia Eagles

While many believed former New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez would join a team that would give him the opportunity to compete for a starting job, he has settled for a backup job that effectively completes a trade of backups between the Jets and Philadelphia Eagles.

After meeting with the Eagles on Wednesday night so that the team could evaluate his surgically repaired throwing shoulder, Sanchez got a clean bill of health from the team's medical staff and he will now join the team later in the day.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports confirmed the news.

The initial belief was that Sanchez would sign with the St. Louis Rams to compete with Sam Bradford for the starting job, thanks to his familiarity with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, but the Rams never showed much interest in the former first-round pick who reached back-to-back AFC championships with the Jets.

Sanchez will now be the primary back up in Philadelphia, likely leapfrogging fellow former USC Trojan Matt Barkley.

Barkley, who struggled in limited action after the Eagles drafted him in the fourth-round last year, will compete with G.J. Kinne for the third-string job.
