Petition calls for SUNY Cortland to ban Michael Vick from Jets training camp

It didn't take long for Michael Vick to have a group of angry fans of his new team coming after him. Shortly after signing a contract to join the New York Jets, the quarterback is the subject of a petition on Change.org that has over 3,500 signatures in the hope of banning Vick from attending the Jets training camp at SUNY Cortland later this summer.

The petition calls for SUNY Cortland president Erik J. Bitterbaum to keep Vick off of the campus as a result of the dogfighting charges back in 2007 that led to Vick's 19-month stay in prison.

“If we welcome Vick onto our campus, we are complicit in his crimes," the petition states. "We are sending the message that, for money and publicity, we will turn a blind eye to the horrors of dogfighting. I don’t want to be that person, and I don’t want SUNY Cortland to abandon its principles so easily.”

It is unlikely that any petition will keep Vick from joining the team on the SUNY Cortland campus for training camp, but if this level of external pressure persists, he will likely have to re-address his troubled past, as he did when he first arrived in Philadelphia.

Vick has done plenty of work to rehabilitate his image since his fall from grace, but it is clear that some people will never forget the past and forgive him for his actions despite what he may be able to accomplish on the field.
