Zach Mettenberger's trainer says surgically repaired knee is '97 percent'

Zach Mettenberger injury update: LSU QB's knee '97 percent' ahead of 2014 NFL draft Zach Mettenberger tossed a career-high 22 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in 2013. (Greg Nelson/SI)

Former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2014 NFL draft class. During his senior season, Mettenberger was en route to a career year before his season -- and collegiate career -- came to an unfortunate end because of a torn ACL.

Despite the injury, Mettenberger has been considered a potential late-first, early second-round pick, but his draft position may depend on that status of his knee.

Luckily for Mettenberger and the teams who are considering him, he is well ahead of schedule with his rehab and nearing full strength.

Albert Breer of the NFL Network discussed Mettenberger's surgically repaired knee with LSU trainer Jack Marucci and the news was all positive. Marucci claims that Mettenberger's knee is currently at "97 percent," adding that Mettenberger could play “if there was a game this week.”

Just three months removed from his surgery, the rapid recovery is a positive sign. Teams will get a closer look at his knee on Wednesday at the LSU pro day.

If teams are confident that Mettenberger's knee is as healthy as Marucci claims, then they could decide to pass on a quarterback in the first-round in hopes of landing Mettenberger in the second. At this rate, it appears that he may be healthy enough to participate in his rookie training camp.
