Falcons 'most likely' partner if Texans deal No. 1 pick in 2014 NFL draft, per reports

Atlanta Falcons 'likely' partner if Houston Texans deal pick in 2014 NFL draft Will the Falcons pull off another blockbuster to land Jadeveon Clowney? (Jim Dedmon/Icon SMI)

In the months leading up to the 2014 NFL draft, there was a strong belief that the Houston Texans would select one of the top quarterbacks with the No. 1 overall pick, but now the tide is turning.

The Texans are hoping to trade out of the No. 1 pick, per multiple reports, and the Falcons are reportedly the "most likely" partner. CBSSports' Jason La Canfora says that the Falcons would be trading up to select Jadeveon Clowney.

By trading down, Houston could stockpile extra picks in this year's draft and still target a player like Khalil Mack a few slots later. The team could then turn its attention toward adding a quarterback of the future with the first pick on Day 2 of the draft. Quarterbacks like Derek Carr, Zach Mettenberger, Jimmy Garoppolo and Tom Savage will all likely be available when the Texans kick off the second day of the draft.

The Falcons are no strangers to big moves in the draft, having traded five picks in 2011 for the right to move up and select wide receiver Julio Jones. Atlanta finished 4-12 last season and is desperate to upgrade along the line.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the current "sense" around the league is that if the Texans do stay at No. 1, they are leaning toward taking Clowney or Mack with the top pick.
