The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Colin Kaepernick were discussing a potential contract extension earlier in the offseason, before Kaepernick was interviewed as part of an investigation into a "suspicious incident" at a Miami hotel.

San Francisco tabled the talks while the process played out, but now the two sides have resumed their discussions and plan to move forward with contract talks.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the plan is for the 49ers to meet with Kaepernick's representatives in Santa Clara this week to continue the contract extension discussion.

The 49ers have cleared more than $9 million in salary cap space after restructuring the contract of linebacker NaVorro Bowman and freeing up the cap hit of former cornerback Carlos Rogers, who was previously designated as a post-June 1 cut.

With the additional cap space, the 49ers can work towards a new deal that will give Kaepernick the pay raise he has deserved since taking over as starting quarterback.

The belief is that Kaepernick's new contract could pay in the $18-20 million per year range. It is a hefty pay raise, but one that is well-deserved, and it is something that head coach Jim Harbaugh has been in support of finalizing sooner rather than later.
