Bills head coach Doug Marrone wonders whether Marcell Dareus 'gets it'

The Buffalo Bills have one of the more dominant young defensive linemen in the league in Marcell Dareus. In three seasons with the team, Dareus has recorded 153 tackles and 18.5 sacks.

Unfortunately, as the team recently found out after he was found himself in trouble with the law for the second time in a month for a drag-racing incident, Dareus has some glaring maturity concerns that should be addressed sooner rather than later. The fourth-year pro is taking a few weeks off from football until the Bills' mandatory minicamp in order to get his priorities straight.

In a recent interview on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio, Bills head coach Doug Marrone was asked whether or not Dareus "gets it" and didn't seem to have a confident answer for explaining his young defensive tackle's actions.

“That’s a good question,” Marrone said, according to Pro Football Talk. “That’s a good question, whether he gets it or not. You say all the right things but then your actions are going to speak louder than your words. We all understand that obviously, and we’re aware, he’s made some poor decisions lately. I’m working with him. He’s dealing with stuff, too.”

Dareus was charged this past week with reckless endangerment and participating in an illegal speeding contest just one month after he was arrested in Alabama for possession of synthetic marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Marrone gave some indication that Dareus has someone to begin steering him down the right path.

“I never wanted to be that guy that exploited players just to win,” Marrone said. “[W]hen it is all said and done with and it is over, you have to look in the mirror and say, ‘Hey, I lived my life. Did I do the right thing?’ Like I said, I’ve gotta help these players to be better men, to be better husbands, I just believe in that. And I’ve got to win at the same time and you’re right, that balance is difficult. But it is what I do. I enjoy it.”
