Canada's Steven Stamkos scores against Slovenia to tie the game in the second period on Monday.

HELSINKI (AP) -- Steven Stamkos scored two goals and Canada rallied for a 4-3 overtime win over Slovenia at the ice hockey world championships Monday.

Jan Urbas scored twice in the first period as Slovenia took a 2-0 lead.

Matt Duchene, Stamkos scored in the second period to tie it before Slovenia scored again late in the period to make it 3-2.

Brenden Dillon scored in the third to send the game into overtime.

The United States and Russia top their group with 15 points, one more than Finland.

The Americans and Finns have a game in hand. On Tuesday, the U.S. meets Slovakia and Finland plays Latvia.

Canada leads its group with 18 points, but Switzerland can win it by securing one point against Belarus on Tuesday.

Sweden will finish third, and Norway will play the Czech Republic in a decider for the remaining place in the quarterfinals.

Also, Russia defeated Austria 8-4. Russia goalie Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves. Ilya Kovalchuk had one goal and two assists, while Alexander Radulov had one goal and an assist.

Alexander Perezhogin, Sergei Mosyakin, Ilya Nikulin, Sergei Soin, Nikita Zaitsev and Yevgeni Kuznetsov also scored for Russia. Austria led 3-2 early in the game.

The results relegate Austria and Slovenia to the second tier of the worlds. They will be replaced by Kazakhstan, which was relegated last year, and a Ukraine team making a comeback after a six-year absence.

"We are very disappointed,'' Austria's Thomas Vanek said. "We beat the wrong teams. We lost to Germany and France, the teams we needed to beat. It is very disappointing when you think we could have stayed up and been developing.''

Also, Latvia beat France 3-1, while Denmark topped Belarus 3-2.
