Hurricanes center Jordan Staal broke his right leg Tuesday night in Carolina's preseason loss to the Buffalo Sabres, according to a statement from the team.

Staal, who turned 26 earlier this month, sustained the injury in the third period after he got tangled up with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges.

Staal was later seen walking on crutches and will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the break. The 'Canes issued a statement following the 2-0 loss to confirm that he broke a bone in the lower portion of his leg and will return to Raleigh on Wednesday to be evaluated by team doctors on Thursday.

A timetable for his recovery has not yet been determined.
