Edmonton Oilers at a glance

EDMONTON OILERS

LAST SEASON: 24-44-14, 62 points. Missed playoffs.

COACH: Todd McLellan (seven NHL seasons, 311-163-66).

ADDED: D Eric Gryba, LW Lauri Korpikoski, C Mark Letestu, C Connor McDavid, G Anders Nilsson, D Griffin Reinhart, D Andrej Sekera, G Cam Talbot.

LOST: G Viktor Fasth, RW Matt Fraser, C Boyd Gordon, D Martin Marincin, RW Steve Pinizzotto.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Connor McDavid. Yes, the Oilers have brought in seven other players, but all eyes are going to be on the No. 1 overall draft pick as the team tries to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06. The 18-year old recorded 120 points (44 goals, 76 assists) in 47 games with the Erie Otters - and he missed time last season due to a broken hand and his international duties playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

OUTLOOK: Edmonton now has experienced personnel in CEO Bob Nicholson, GM Peter Chiarelli and coach Todd McLean. The selection of McDavid was a no-brainer, and the additions of goaltender Cam Talbot and defensemen Andrej Sekera, Eric Gryba and Griffin Reinhart are upgrades. The Oilers may not be a playoff team this season, but they won't be a contender for the first overall pick in next June's draft either.
