Preseason roundup: Bruins spoil Lundqvist debut, return of Zuccarello

Brad Marchand scored in the sixth round of the shootout to give the Boston Bruins a 4–3 home victory over the New York Rangers in exhibition play Thursday night.

Ryan Spooner and Frank Vatrano also had shootout goals. Spooner and Brandon Carlo scored in the third period to help Boston overcome a 3–1 deficit. Tyler Randell also scored for Boston, which lost defenseman Zdeno Chara to an upper-body injury in the first period.

Jeremy Smith made 22 saves for the Bruins.

Brady Skjei, Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes scored for New York. Zuccarello and Dan Boyle scored in the shootout.

Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves in two periods, and Jeff Malcolm stopped 15 shots in the third period and overtime.

New York’s Lundqvist, Zuccarello, Derick Brassard, Rick Nash and Ryan McDonagh made their preseason debuts. For Zuccarello, it was his first game action since Game 5 of the Metropolitan Division semifinal series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. His skull was fractured when he was struck by McDonagh’s stick in the first period of New York's 2–1 series-ending victory.

Before the game, New York assigned Richard Nejezchleb and Travis Oleksuk to Hartford of the American Hockey League affiliate and released Jayden Hart and Kirill Kabanov. Hart and Kabanov attended camp on tryouts.

RED WINGS ROUT PENGUINS

In Detroit, Dylan Larkin and Teemu Pulkkinen each scored two goals in the Detroit Red Wings’ 6–1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Tyler Bertuzzi and Drew Miller also scored for Detroit, and Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots.

Pittsburgh goalie Matthew Murray allowed all six Detroit goals on 27 shots.

Beau Bennett scored for the Penguins.

Johan Franzen played his first game for Detroit since suffering a concussion in a regular-season game Jan. 6 against Edmonton.

OSHIE'S SHOOTOUT GOAL LIFTS CAPITALS OVER CANADIENS

In Montreal, T.J. Oshie scored the lone shootout goal in the Washington Capitals’ 4–3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

Oshie, Andre Burakovsky and Alex Ovechkin scored for the Capitals in regulation.

Braden Holtby allowed three goals on 13 shots in two periods for Washington, and Dan Ellis stopped all 12 shots he faced in the third and overtime.

Tomas Fleischmann, Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais scored for the Canadiens.

Montreal starter Dustin Tokarski stopped 19 of 22 shots in 32:03. Mike Condon turned away 21 shots in 32:57.

DUBNYK, WILD, STYMIE BLUE JACKETS

In Columbus, Ohio, Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves to help the Minnesota Wild beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5–2.

Christian Folin, Nino Niederreiter, Jonas Brodin, Erik Haula and Jason Zucker scored for Minnesota

James Sheppard and Brandon Dubinsky scored for the Blue Jackets. Curtis McElhinney made 19 saves for Columbus, and Anton Forsberg allowed two goals on six shots in final 1-1/2 periods.

STARS SINGING THE BLUES

In St. Louis, Vladimir Tarasenko and Paul Stastny scored twice to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 6–0 victory over the Dallas Stars.

Petteri Lindbohm and Joel Edmundson also scored for the Blues, and Brian Elliott made 22 saves.

Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen allowed all six goals on 30 shots.

ORTIO, FLAMES BLANK AVALANCHE

In Denver, Joni Ortio stopped all 35 shots in the Calgary Flames’ 1–0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

Josh Jooris scored the lone goal midway through the first period.

Reto Berra made 24 saves for Colorado.
