Perry, Khudobin lead Ducks over Sharks 1-0

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Corey Perry gave Anaheim the early advantage and then the Ducks fended off constant pressure to make it stand.

Perry scored on a breakaway early in the first period, Anton Khudobin made 31 saves and the Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks 1-0 Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

''We fought like crazy to get that win,'' Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler said. ''I'd still like to see us be on the attack a little bit more in third periods. I just feel like we're defending all the time.''

Khudobin got his first shutout since late February and his fifth career. The Ducks have rebounded nicely following a 1-7-2 start.

''I hadn't played in a while, but at the same time I tried to get in the game as fast as I can,'' Khudobin said. ''The guys did a hell of a job. In the first 10 minutes, I didn't even see one shot. The effort was tremendous.''

The Ducks recorded their first shutout in San Jose in eight years and their first 1-0 win here in 16 years.

Martin Jones made 16 saves and the Sharks lost to the Ducks for just the second time in their last seven meetings.

San Jose center Tommy Wingels thought he tied it midway through the second period after he grabbed Hampus Lindholm's turnover and fired a shot that hit Khudobin's stick and clanked off the corner of the crossbar.

''The sound it made didn't sound like a crossbar,'' Wingels said. ''I saw the replay and it didn't go in.''

The Ducks crisp possession play and forecheck limited the Sharks opportunities and Khudobin played magician against a handful of one-on-one confrontations, including Patrick Marleau's point-blank shot midway through the third period.

''It was a good play by him,'' Marleau said. ''I thought I'd get the shot off quickly and surprise him. He just made a good play.''

The Sharks won their first four games of the season but are 3-7 since.

The Ducks won their first road game in regulation after starting 0-5-1 away from Anaheim.

''It was definitely a no-frills game,'' Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. ''The first period, the first 15 minutes, that's as good as we've played all year. I thought we were pressuring the puck, we were on top of them, we were getting scoring chances.''

Perry scored after the Ducks recovered a turnover and Ryan Getzlaf led him with a pass that left him one-on-one with Jones. He beat the goalie to the stick side.

''Give them credit for coming out hard the first 10 minutes and getting us on our heels,'' Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. ''We were standing around watching. From that point on we played a heck of a game.''

The Sharks were 0 for 4 on the power play, with two tries in the final 5 minutes. They have yet to convert any of 19 such opportunities at home.

''The power play didn't click and we just have to stick with it,'' DeBoer said.
